I have a pair of true percula clownfish in my 55 gallon tank and lately they have been breathing very fast! I have recently purchased new lights 2 Hamilton Tech pendants each with a 250W 20,000K bulb and 2 32W dual actinic bulbs. I am having an issue with the water temp jumping during the day due to the lights I have tried adjusting the level above the water to help but I dont want to get them to high bc they will lose the affect I need on the coral towards the bottom. The male clown also seemed to have a little case of ick this morning. I know the temp change can be tough so does anyone have any suggestions? The temp was almost 84 yesterday when I got home. Putting a chiller on a 55 is not something I anticipated having to do or wanting to do so I am open to any and all suggestions. Thanks in advance for the help!

You can try computer fans blowing over the top of the water to cool it. I have a chiller on my 180 but I have seen/heard of the fan thing and it seems to work pretty well. You can even install them into a hood if you dont want to see them

you can also freeze water in water bottles and put them in your sump...assuming you have a sump....you cas also get a clip on fan and put it on the sump...hell a box fan will work until you find something better....better to be a little ugly and to come home to a crashed/melted tank.

Just to be careful I would also check your ammonia levels. Rapid breathing can also be caused by elevated ammonia levels that reduces the effectiveness of the oxygen exchange in gills. They could be breathing heavy because of the stress of the temp change as you stated, but it wouldn't hurt to eleminate other possible causes.

How many hours a day are you running the MH's? Cutting down the time on MH's may help.

i doubt the temp is your problem, my tank has seen fluctuations of 6 degrees in the summer with no problems like that.
